The Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context (CLSGC) and the Centre for European and International Legal Affairs (CEILA) are holding a joint seminar on Populism and International Law Seminar with Professor Jan Wouters, Jean Monnet Chair ad personam and Full Professor of International Law, and Director of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, KU Leuven.
Is there any relationship between populism and international law? This lecture submits there is: populist leadership of States feeds into international practice and therefore influences the course of international law, especially when leaders of powerful States are concerned. Apart from looking into some examples of this influence, the lecture asks a number of additional questions: Is this influence problematic, or should we see that it is a logical consequence of the architectural design of international law? Does it matter or not whether the populist heads of State or government happen to have been democratically elected? Might international law succumb to populism, or does it have its own form of resilience against it? Does, or could, something like “populist international law” exist?
Jan Wouters (°1964) is Jean Monnet Chair ad personam EU and Global Governance, Full Professor of International Law and International Organizations, and founding Director of the Institute for International Law and of the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, an interdisciplinary centre of excellence, at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven). The Centre was recognized in 2016 as a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.
