On 1 December 2014 the five-year transitional period - foreseen by Protocol 36 of the Lisbon Treaty for allacts of the Union in the field of police cooperation and judicial co-operation in criminal matters adoptedbefore 1 December 2009 - will come to an end. This will entail a decisive move towards supranationalcriminal justice in the European Union by strengthening the role of EU institutions including theCommission and the Court of Justice. The United Kingdom has opted out from this body of legislation, butis currently negotiating with the European institutions to opt back into a number of these measures from1 December.
This seminar will address the implications of these developments for both the place of the United Kingdomin Europe’s Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, but also for the coherence and future direction ofEuropean criminal law.
This event will be followed by a drinks reception to which all attendees are invited.
