The event will be part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the School of Law at QMUL and launch our new Centre for Research on Law, Equality and Diversity (LEAD) to be directed by Professor Lizzie Barmes and Professor Kate Malleson. The launch event will feature a panel discussion on the topic of Positive Action.
There is growing disquiet about the failure of public and private institutions to reflect the demographic composition of the populations from which they are drawn. As a result attention is increasingly turning to the use of positive action to redress the under-representation of many identity groups in public and working life, especially in the higher ranks of the occupational hierarchy and as holders of public power. This event will debate the use of such measures, particularly ‘tie-break’ approaches to recruitment and selection that the Equality Act 2010 and subsequent legislation have made more legally permissible.
