This module explores how legal systems manage cultural diversity. While the English legal system is the core case study the course is taught by taking into account the wider comparative context of managing cultural diversity. The topics for discussion include a variety of conceptual problems such as culture; cultural difference; multiculturalism, assimilation and integration; legal pluralism; and the significance of long-standing and newer diversities introduced through immigration. The course will also involve a study of individual substantive areas ranging from crime to anti-discrimination law.
