Mile End Library Transformation

Starting with a concept in 2018 to review, modernise, and transform the Mile End Library, the transformation project sought to increase the library's overall size, refurbish and update areas, create new spaces, and provide a consistent, high-quality finish throughout the building.

The transformation project started in Spring 2021 and was completed in Autumn 2023 with an official Celebration and Conversation event held on 7 February 2024.

Interior of the extension

The works were a multi-phase programme that delivered:

  • A redesigned building entrance, welcome hall and ground floor study spaces
  • A two-storey extension to the south end of the building, providing an additional c500 study spaces and more group study rooms
  • More loanable laptops and new PCs
  • A sympathetic refurbishment to the 1st and 2nd floors
  • A new, enlarged Archives Reading Room
  • A refurbished Research Reading Room
  • A consistent colour scheme and decor across all floors
