If you're looking for support with maths, statistics, or data analysis, why not come along to one of our in-person drop-in sessions? The sessions run several times a week in both the Mile End and Whitechapel libraries. There's no need to book, you can just turn up!
A drop-in session is an unstructured session open to all students at the university. There is no need to book onto a drop-in, you can just turn up. In the session there will be an experienced adviser present, with whom you can discuss any issues or problems you are having with any maths, calculations, statistics, or data anlysis work you are doing as part of your studies.
You can come along to any session you like and stay as long as you like. How you use the session is up to you. You might have a specific question in mind you want to ask the adviser, or you might just want a quiet space to work independantly, knowing there is an adviser on hand for if/when you have an issue understanding something. Either way, we encourage you to bring along some tasks to work on whilst you're in the session, as the adviser may be busy with another student when you arrive and so you might have to wait to talk to them.
With mathematics, the adviser cannot support you with any work that is assessed, so please do not ask for help with any assignments that count towards your final mark. We can discuss non-assessed work (such as weekly problems sheets, or example problems from notes) and can also help you to understand concepts from your lexture notes.
With statistics and data analysis, we can discuss your research project, dissertation, etc. with you to help you to understand the data analysis involved, but again we cannot give any direct instructions and cannot do the data analysis for you.
In general, we will not solve problems - even unassessed ones - for you, but will instead discuss the problem with you to understand what the issues are, and then help you to overcome those issues by discussing the concepts involved (often with reference to your lecture notes, so please remember to bring them!)
Please note: in Semester A the drop-in sessions will run every week up to Friday 13th December 2024.
The sessions run at the following times and locations:
Whitechapel Library: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am-12pm in Teaching Room 2 (in the basement; the staircase down to the basement is at the back of the library on the left-hand side)
Mile End Library: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2pm-4pm in the Seminar Room (on the ground floor; go through the two sets of double-doors in front of the turnstiles and cross to the back of the open plan section)
