Accessibility statement for the Library Search

Accessibility statement for the Library Search

The accessibility statement applies to content published on the https://search.library.qmul.ac.uk/iii/encore/?lang=eng domain, run by the Queen Mary University of London.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible is this website?

The Library Search function is provided by a third-party supplier, and the Queen Mary University of London cannot directly change the accessibility of that function.  Library Search is currently not fully compliant with accessibility legislation. We are working with our software supplier to address those issues as much as reasonably possible.

The areas of inaccessibility are:

  • Some pages have poor colour contrast.
  • Some of our online forms are difficult to navigate using just a keyboard.
  • Some heading elements are not consistent.
  • Some images do not have good alternative text or are missing alternative text.
  • Some buttons are not correctly identified.
  • Some adjacent links are used for the same destination.
  • Some labels are incorrectly used.
  • Some element IDs are repeated, incorrectly ordered, insufficiently labelled, or non-unique.
  • HTML is used to format content.
  • The same link text is used for multiple destinations.
  • The site language is not set.
  • In certain circumstances, zooming is disabled, or zooming can cut off some page features.
  • Some links are not sufficiently distinguishable without relying on colour or have insufficient discernible text.
  • Some pages have missing focuses, or the focus order may not be intuitive.

Contrast Issues

Issues with Info and Relationships

Input fields should always have a description that is explicitly associated with the field to make sure that users of assistive technologies will also know what the field is for. (Success criteria 1.3.1 Info and Relationships).

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We recognise that some content on Library Search is not fully accessible, but the University is committed to improving this through:

  • A programme of work to update all content intended for our audiences to resolve some of the accessibility issues.
  • Working with software suppliers to resolve some of the accessibility issues.
  • Exploring other third-party supplier provision that will provide increased compliance.
