The catalogue of the archives of General Sir Neville Lyttelton (1845-1931), an officer in the British Army, is now available here.
These family papers contain the correspondence of Neville Lyttelton, his wife Katherine and daughters Lucy, Hilda and Hermione to and from family and friends, including photographs and ephemera, dating from c.1782-1940.
Neville Lyttelton served during the Second Boer War, was Commander-in-Chief in South Africa from 1902 to 1904 and in Ireland from 1908-1912, and was appointed Governor of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea in 1912.
Highlights of the papers include: Accounts of Neville Lyttelton’s time in the army, including serving in the Second Boer War. The travels and friendships of Katherine, including her time spent living in Gibraltar and India and her varied correspondence with friends including prominent authors, poets and playwrights. The family was very well connected, with the collection containing correspondence with eminent politicians such as Prime Minister, William Gladstone (1809-1898) and Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey (1862-1933). Also contained in the collection is correspondence to and from Neville Lyttelton’s three daughters, including details of Lucy’s career a poet and politician.
