HISTORY OF CLUBS AND SOCIETIES AT QUEEN MARY

With the start of the new academic year comes the inevitable task of deciding which clubs and societies to join.

From sports clubs like rowing, hockey, rugby or rock climbing, to music, academic, cultural, and faith societies, these clubs are joined by more recent additions such as the Lego society or Game of Thrones society. With so many options there is something for everyone.

Here in Queen Mary’s archives we hold papers, photographs and objects covering the long standing history of many of these societies. Historic student newspapers and magazines are a great source for those interested in looking back at QMUL’s societies and events, and are themselves a creation of student societies. Alongside student magazines such as ELC Magazine (1910-1937), Leopardess publications (1936-1971) and CUB newspapers (1947-2008), the archives also holds various photographs and promotional material for clubs, the Geography Society Magazine (1962-1963), the Law Society Journal (1978), and Freshers Programmes (1956-1965).

All of these and more are waiting to be discovered in the archives. For more information or to book an appointment to see any of these collections please contact us at archives@qmul.ac.uk
