Constance Maynard was the first Mistress of Westfield College and a pioneer in women’s higher education.
A recent project to digitise her diaries and autobiography has now been completed and the records are available to view online. You can access the texts via their respective catalogue entries or via a new webpage.
Her personal diaries and previously unpublished autobiography offer a fascinating insight into her thoughts on the changing world in which she lived. They highlight her strong religious devotion, and describe her experiences of being the first women to read Moral Sciences at Cambridge, and her role in establishing Westfield College.
To co-inside with the online launch, an exhibition based upon the writings of Maynard is on display outside the Archives Reading Room on the 2nd floor of the Mile End Library, with highlights from the exhibition also available to view in an online gallery.
