Alongside our publisher transitional agreements and open access funding streams, there are also a number of free-to-publish open access options known as Diamond open access and subscribe-to-open open access.
These schemes allow any author accepted for publication to publish open access without any cost. This is paid for through voluntary subscriptions and donations made by universities and other institutions. Queen Mary University of London supports a number of these schemes but you are not limited to publishing via this method to where we do pay any donations.
Diamond and subscribe-to-open publications represent a route to publishing open access that does not require any upfront costs or paid-for agreements for authors or institutions.
When you are considering where to publish your work and you want to do so open access but do not have any funding or publishing agreement to utilize, Diamond and subscribe-to-open publications may be a useful option to explore.

Peer Community In (PCI) is a non-profit organization of researchers offering peer review, recommendation and publication of scientific articles in open access for free.
Following submission by authors, the thematic PCIs evaluate preprints in their scientific fields based on rigorous peer review. After evaluation, the PCIs may recommend those preprints, to make them complete, reliable and citable articles, without the need for publication in ‘traditional’ journals. Authors who need to publish their article in a journal can publish it for free in Peer Community Journal or submit it to a PCI-friendly or other journal.
Peer Community Journal publishes articles dealing with all fields of evolutionary biology, ecology, zoology, neuroscience, paleontology, animal science, archaeology, genomics, mathematical and computational biology, network Science, forest and wood science, biotic interactions, ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. It will also publish articles based on registered reports dealing with all physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Pluto Journals is an international, Diamond Open Access, scholarly publisher in the social sciences, it is owned by the not-for-profit Pluto Educational Trust. As such, it plays a unique and valuable role serving the establishment of new fields of critical scholarship. It has proven itself to be part of a global re-orientation of learning that represents scholarship committed to investigating pressing questions of post-colonialism, anti-racist efforts, and social justice.
Its journals cover many of the important societal issues of our day: social justice, international law, Arab and Islamic studies, trade, race and identity, political economy and labour. The list and its coverage have grown steadily since the company was founded in 2008. Recent launches include new journals in topics ranging from pan-Africanism and intersectionality to disability studies and Fair Trade.
