Queen Mary in Malta

Entry requirements

The Queen Mary entry requirements for September 2025 entry are based on following factors:

  1. Academic qualifications and performance (or predictions)
  2. Aptitude testing – the UCAT
  3. Age
  4. English Language

Upon making your application, you are asked to upload relevant documents as evidence. We encourage you to group associated documents together to avoid delay. For example, include all of your A Level certificates within the same document.

1. Academic qualifications

A-Levels

3 A-levels at AAA, achieved in one sitting over a study period of no longer than two years.

A-levels must include:

  • Grade A in Biology or Chemistry,
  • Grade A in a second science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Mathematics)
  • Grade A can be in any subject apart from Critical Thinking and General Studies

Queen Mary does not consider any applications from students who are re-sitting their AS or A level year (or equivalent) - thereby taking 3 years to achieve the required grades - unless protected under the Equality and Diversity Act 2010. Applicants citing this provision must provide the school with evidence to ensure their application is suitable for consideration under this framework. Full details of how to apply for extenuating circumstances can be found here in the MBBS Malta section.

Alternative qualifications

The full International Baccalaureate is acceptable as an entry qualification at 37 points overall, with 665 in Higher Level subjects.

Biology or Chemistry and a second science subject or Mathematics must be included. Biology and Chemistry must be taken as Standard Level if not taken at Higher Level.

If English is not offered as part of the diploma, you must have a GCSE or equivalent at grade B or above.

The European Baccalaureate is acceptable as an entry qualification. Applicants must offer Chemistry and Biology. Minimum grades of 8.2 are required in each of these two options and a grade of 82 per cent is required overall. Good passes at GCSE at grade B or above or acceptable equivalent in Mathematics and English Language, if not offered as part of the Baccalaureate, are also required.

The International Foundation Programme from NCUK is accepted for entry to MBBS Malta. We require AAA in three major modules (IFYBI002 Biology, IFYCH002 Chemistry, IFYMS002 Mathematics (Science) or IFYAPH004 Physics), to be taken in one sitting. In addition, candidates must have an overall A in English for Academic purposes (FYEN001) with a minimum B in writing and D in all other components.

A in Chemistry or Biology,

A in another Science or Maths (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Maths),

A in third module

The GEMS International Medical Foundation Programme is accepted for entry to MBBS Malta.

You may apply in the final year of your degree and must be predicted/achieved at least an upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in any subject. Degrees are divided into three categories:

  • Bioscience degrees which DO contain sufficient biology and chemistry: no further A or AS level requirements
  • Science degrees which lack biology or chemistry: candidates must have a minimum A or AS level grade C for biology and/or chemistry (depending on what is missing in your degree).
  • Non-science degrees: Candidates must have a minimum B grade A or AS level in chemistry or biology, plus one other science also at grade B. Accepted science subjects are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, and Psychology. You may apply with achieved or predicted grades.

To check whether your degree has additional A Level requirements, please use our Degree Title Checker.

Degrees must be completed in the natural length intended for the qualification (generally, 3 years for Bachelors, and 4 years for integrated Masters).

If you are unsure about the acceptability of your degree or what A/AS requirements you may need, please contact us and we will be happy to advise. We may request you provide us with evidence as to why you believe your degree should be exempted from the A or AS level requirement.

Graduates with a non-UK degree

To ensure eligibility, graduates who offer a degree with at least an upper second class honours or equivalent and who have graduated from a university outside the UK, must provide the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office (smd-mbbs-malta@qmul.ac.uk) with the following:

  • A transcript of your degree (translated into English, if necessary) and evidence of High School qualifications (e.g. IB, etc.)
  • Graduates from USA/Canada must offer an honours degree with a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Information for US and Canadian students

US and Canadian students can study on the five-year MBBS (Malta) Programme directly after high school without first undertaking a four-year college undergraduate degree. Students may apply to stay in Malta for their early postgraduate training at the end of the five-year MBBS (Malta) programme or apply for residency in their home country, without having to undertake a four-year postgraduate medicine qualification.

The Sponsor Note on our listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) confirms that the MBBS degree, awarded by the Barts & The London School of Medicine in Malta, is acceptable to the Education Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).  This means that current students and graduates of this medical school are eligible to apply for ECFMG certification. If the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1 and 2 CK and Step 2 CS requirements are satisfied, graduates may continue and take Step 3. This acceptability by ECFMG also allows our students and graduates to sit Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE).

2. UCAT

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is an admissions test, used by a consortium of UK Universities and non-UK associate member universities to help select applicants for their medical and dental degree programmes.

It is used in collaboration with other admissions processes, such as academic qualifications.

It is also your opportunity to stand out from other applicants and demonstrate your aptitude for a demanding programme of study.

The UCAT is a computer-based test delivered in Pearson VUE test centres throughout the UK and worldwide.  More information on the UCAT and how to register can be found here.

How we use the UCAT

  • Your application will not be considered further than the first shortlisting if you obtained a total UCAT score below the third decile. Please note there is no guarantee that you will be offered an interview if you score above the third decile. SJT Band 4 will not be considered.
  • It is not possible to predict what the thresholds will be in any individual year, nor to use data from previous years to predict subsequent years’ thresholds.

UCAT Exemptions/Waiver

UCAT exemptions/waivers are not granted under any circumstances. If you are unable to take the UCAT for any reason, our advice will be to reapply for the following application cycle.

The UCAT ANZ is accepted by students applying from Australia or New Zealand.
