Queen Mary has been awarded the “Excellence in Digital Health Education Award” at the third Med-Tech Awards event held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, Malta.
The awards ceremony brought together an exciting array of medical professionals, technologists, exhibitors, speakers, sponsors, and winners to close out in style the three-day Med-Tech World Summit.Appropriately for Queen Mary (which runs a successful medical school in Malta), the Mediterranean Conference Centre was originally built as a hospital by the Knights of Malta in the 16th Century, a fitting venue for the University to receive this sought after accolade in the digital Med-Tech category.
Queen Mary’s presence at the Summit attracted much attention, with dozens of meetings and high-level networking for the University across medicine, enterprise, investors, authorities, and digital education.
In addition to the Queen Mary showcase booth, the University contributed to the success of the overall event with keynote talks from Professor Chie Adachi, Queen Mary Dean for Digital Education and Professor Philip Duncan Taylor, Queen Mary Emeritus Professor of Prosthodontics. Mr. Rajesh Sivaprakasam, Lead for Robotic Renal Failure Surgery at Barts Health NHS Trust and Surgical Education Lead at Queen Mary further contributed to a panel discussion on how digital can help Clinical Trials.
The Honourable Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Robert Abela, visited the Queen Mary Malta stand and highlighted the contribution of Queen Mary towards professional medical healthcare education in Malta and encouraged further investment in medical technology.
Professor Anthony Warrens, Dean for Education, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, said: "This year we are celebrating the “Barts 900”, a very significant milestone anniversary for Queen Mary, and we are more than delighted to have the ongoing innovation of our medical and learning development recognised with this prestigious Med-Tech award in Malta.”
Naomi McDonald, Head of Business Development at Queen Mary, Malta Campus, said: “Our Malta Campus is perfectly positioned to act as an enterprise hub in Europe as we navigate the intersection of medicine and technology and to serve as a conduit between our research and industry. We now have 287 medical students in Malta and we are looking at new ways to expand our operations in the state-of-the-art Queen Mary Campus. MedTech is firmly on our agenda for ongoing strategic development, and this will bring added value not just for Queen Mary but to our many gifted students who are actively pursuing this sector of medicine, both as healthcare professionals and business entrepreneurs in their own right. These contributions to the development of our societies around the world is something we proactively encourage at Queen Mary and will be looking to further support in the coming years as the Malta Campus continues to grow its influence in Gozo and beyond.”
Professor Chie Adachi, Dean for Digital Education, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, said: “It was a pleasure to return to the island of Malta which is fast becoming a centre for both EdTech and MedTech development. This aligns perfectly with the vision of our Digital Education Studio. At the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry we are working to challenge the traditional curriculum of medical education through a ‘digital-first’ lens and remove the artificial barrier between ‘in-person’ and ‘online’ education. This allows us to incorporate the latest technology to provide our students with the flexibility that they need and prepare them for the future work of medicine as doctors in a post-digital world. We hope to create new opportunities and learning experiences that would be otherwise impossible.”
