Levelling Up: Maths

Levelling Up: Maths is a scheme supported by The London Mathematical Society to provide students from underrepresented backgrounds with online tutoring and guidance with their university applications.

The School of Mathematical Sciences launched Levelling Up: Maths for Black Heritage Students in February 2023. Together with The London Mathematical Society and our donor, Dr Tony Hill, we identified Black heritage students as a priority group for this scheme as they are currently underrepresented in STEM subjects at universities in the UK.

This scheme is for A-Level Maths students in year 12 or equivalent who identify as Black heritage and intend to study a course at university which lists A-Level Mathematics as a required subject. Regular online tutorials are delivered during term time by our superstar team of Black heritage Maths tutors who are currently studying across a wide range of Mathematics programmes at Queen Mary.

In order to apply for this programme, you must:

  • Identify as Black heritage
  • Be a year 12 or equivalent student at the time of application
  • Study A-Level Mathematics (Further Maths is not required)
  • Live permanently in the UK
  • Be resident of Greater London. We understand that some students may go to school in London, but technically live outside of London and we encourage applications from students at all Greater London schools.
  • The scheme will run from Jan 2025 until May 2026, excluding school and university holidays and exam periods.
  • Online tutorials will take place once a fortnight on Wednesdays from 5-6:30pm. In the period following the Spring Break, tutorials will take place once a week to help students prepare for their A-Level Maths exam.
  • Online tutorials will be supplemented by in-person events and all students will be invited to Queen Mary to meet with face-to-face with their tutors as well as admissions and outreach staff from the School of Mathematical Sciences.
  • We will hold a launch event for all successful applicants at the School of Mathematical Sciences at the start of the programme. You will have a chance to meet your tutors and classmates in person and speak to outreach and admissions staff from Queen Mary. Full details to follow.

Apply
Applications for the 2025-26 cohort will open towards the end of the year. Please check back in November 2024 for information about how to apply for our next cohort.
