A new home for our School

The School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary has a new home as the transformed Mathematical Sciences Building opens its doors this week.

Published:

Staff have now moved from the School's temporary home in the Queens' Building into the Mathematical Sciences Building, and will be joined by students when term starts on 23 September.

The building has seen an £18m transformation and provides a range of high-quality teaching, learning, working and social spaces for staff and students, including:

  • 71 academic offices
  • A School Office to accommodate the whole Professional Services team
  • 72 PhD desks in one office the full length of the south side of the building
  • Private and group study areas – including dedicated areas for undergraduate and postgraduate students, and academic hubs
  • A dedicated room for maths research seminars
  • State of the art mathematics lecture theatre (opening in Semester 2) and two teaching rooms
  • An IT Lab for master level students
  • An office for post-doctoral researchers

Head of School Professor Boris Khoruzhenko said:

“We are delighted to have moved into our new home. These high-quality facilities for our staff and students will give us the space we need to thrive as a top mathematics department. I’d like to say thank you to our School Manager Jo Young and Emmanuel Nibo, Senior Project Manager in Estates and their teams for their tireless work on this project. We look forward to opening our doors to students in the coming weeks.”

A formal launch event is planned for 2020.
