Two students from the School of Mathematical Sciences will represent Queen Mary in the prestigious Hiscox University Data Challenge, a national competition for students to develop solutions to challeges faced by the insurance industry.
Maximillian Michaelides and Merel Turksema, who are both studying Maths and Statistics at Queen Mary, have been selected to take part in this year's challenge.
As part of the challenge they have been tasked with finding innovative approaches to the measurement and assessment of prospective insurance customers in Florida, a state that is at high risk of hurricane activity.
Max and Merel have enjoyed taking part in the challenge: “It’s exciting to be able to do maths in a real-life working team setting,” explained Merel. Max added, “We crunch numbers a lot, but we wanted to test our knowledge in something that would involve maths but also test our skills beyond it.”
Participants in the Hiscox University Data Challenge receive fast-tracked entry to the Hiscox graduate assessment centre and access to industry experts throughout the process. The winner will also receive £1,000 for their university society.
Congratulations to Max and Merel for being selected to take part.
