Aklima, who is currently studying BSc Mathematics with Finance and Accounting, is part of our brilliant team of student ambassadors who support the School of Maths with the delivery of a range of activities and events throughout the year. We had a chat with Aklima to find out more about her overall experience as a maths student and ambassador at Queen Mary University of London.
What made you choose to study BSc Mathematics with Finance and Accounting at Queen Mary?
One of the reasons I chose to study BSc Mathematics with Finance and Accounting at Queen Mary is due to the variety and flexibility of modules it offers. My degree has given me the opportunity to study a combination of pure maths, statistics, finance and accounting modules. Having a diverse range of modules, taught by brilliant lecturers, has kept me motivated and engaged with my studies over the course of my degree.
What do you enjoy the most about your degree? What are your favourite modules?
I am constantly learning new things and developing different skills such as problem-solving and proving theories. In my second year, I studied Statistical Modelling for which we heavily used R, a programming language used for statistical computing, during our tutorials. Despite having no experience with programming prior to the module, I was able to come to grips with it relatively quickly due to the immense support provided by the lecturer. This was perhaps my favourite module as I was able to see how the theory we had learned during lectures was applied in practice.
Can you tell us a bit about your overall experience as a Student Ambassador?
My experience as a Student Ambassador has been brilliant. I have really enjoyed the different events that I have taken part in. I have been able to give presentations to offer-holders about the transition to University, been part of a Q&A panel held for A-levels students, and called and congratulated successful candidates on results day. It has been great to be able to showcase our University and the School of Mathematical Sciences to future undergraduates and to be able to give our point of view as students.
What are your plans for the future?
When I started university, I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduation but I am very fortunate that my degree is so versatile and it does open many doors for the future. I have recently started a placement at EY within the assurance service line; it is still early days but I am really enjoying it so far.
