In this blog we spoke to Queen Mary University of London student, Joseph Michael Hinshelwood, who is pursuing his Mathematics and Statistics degree at the School of Mathematical Sciences. He discusses his experience at the School and his plans for the future.
I have always been interested in Maths and wished to continue studying it further. It was during my A-levels that I became excited about statistics and its applications. It was also exciting to see that this was a fast-developing field of study and that related topics such as data science were becoming of great importance. The good thing about Queen Mary is that it allowed me to be flexible with my choice of modules and develop knowledge in other fields such as economics and programming alongside mathematics.
Studying at Queen Mary has been a very good experience for me. What I like about the University is its friendly atmosphere and its wholesome campus environment. Everyone, from academics to members of staff, is very approachable and supportive. Being a student ambassador is also something I have thoroughly enjoyed. It’s been a great opportunity for me to work with a wide range of students, get involved with local community festivals, summer schools and offer holder days, as well as helping younger students who are interested in pursuing a degree in Maths at Queen Mary.
I would like to enter teaching and go on to teach secondary mathematics. I will be pursuing a PGCE from September at the University of East London. Mathematics has greatly benefitted me and I am keen to enable others to have a positive experience with Maths. I would like to engage with a wide variety of students and would like to develop the skills to teach successfully from year 7 through to sixth form. I am also interested in supporting students who are thinking about studying a maths degree and ensuring that they can make that successful transition.
I suggest that they keep up their motivation and love for maths, while continuing to explore their interests and never give up, even in tough times, because that passion will eventually take them wherever they want to go.
