The dynamics of higher-order networks

Supervisor: Prof Ginestra Bianconi

Project description:

Networks have been very successful to investigate complex systems.  However they have the strong limitation that they capture only pairwise interactions. Recently growing attention has been addressed to higher-order networks  that include interactions among two or more nodes and allow to go beyond the description provided by graphs and networks.

We are looking for excellent candidates with background in one or more of the following: statistical mechanics, nonlinear dynamics discrete topology for a PhD project on dynamics of higher-order networks.

Depending on the background of the candidate the project might focus on

  1. Statistical approaches to higher-order networks, including modelling of higher-order networks and percolation processes on hypergraphs and simplicial complexes.
  2. Topology driven higher-order dynamics of higher-order networks, especially focusing on synchronization and control of nodes signals and topological signals, i.e. variables associated to nodes but also to edges and higher-order structures.
  3. Theoretical approaches to discrete geometry coupled with dynamics, focusing mostly on adaptive dynamics of weights and dynamical processes defined on higher-order networks, with possible application ranging from brain research to machine learning.
