MSc entry requirements and application procedure

Maths building at Queen Mary

Entry requirements

The majority of our applicants will have an undergraduate degree with first class or upper second class honours. If you completed your undergraduate degree outside of the UK, please refer to the postgraduate course finder to see the requirements from your country of study.

We assess each application individually and offers will typically be made at 2.1 level (upper second class) or above.  Students with a good lower second class degree may be considered on an individual basis.  In some cases your offer may include additional conditions, such as minimum grades in specified modules, in order to ensure that you are sufficiently qualified for our MSc programmes. Please be aware that the Admissions Tutor may require further information from you regarding your mathematical background.

For mathematics MSc programmes we require an undergraduate qualification in a subject with a substantial mathematical component, e.g. mathematics, statistics, physics, engineering, economics, or computer science.

For detailed international entry requirements, please see the country-specific information on our International Student webpages. If your first language is not English, you must provide evidence of your English language proficiency. Non-native English speakers are required to have a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent; please see our English language requirements for details.

Tips for applying

  • Reference letters – Please note that the application process requires two academic references. You can either upload the references with your online form or simply supply referee contact details. In the latter case the Admissions Team will request references directly from your named referees – please note that if your referees are slow in responding to this request, you may experience delays in the processing of your application.
  • Transcript – Remember to upload a full academic transcript when you complete your online form, which details all of the modules taken and results gained for your qualifications. This is an important piece of documentation that the Admissions Tutor requires to reach an informed decision.
