A Week in the Life of an MSc Student

MSc Data Analytics student, Muhammad Mustafa, talked us through a typical week in his life as a Masters student in the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Muhammad Mustafa said 'I structured my week around a blend of lectures, tutorials, coursework, part-time work, and volunteering in the university’s community. This approach has helped me evolve from a new student into an aspiring data analyst with a solid academic foundation and valuable professional experience. Undeniably, this year has made a lasting impact on both my personal and professional development.'

Read on to learn about a week in his life.

Monday: setting the tone

Mondays kick off with a self-study morning. I usually start by revising the previous week's content, catching up on pre-readings, or working on any assignments. After a productive morning, I head to my afternoon classes and tutorials. I often squeeze in a quick workout at Q-Motion to energise myself for the week ahead.

Evenings are typically spent in the library or the study space in the Graduate Centre, which boasts some breathtaking views. These sessions are not just about academics; I also use this time to catch up on emails and stay updated with my responsibilities as a Course Representative and Maths Ambassador. I usually wind down with an early dinner at one of the spots on campus with friends. Sitting by the canal or hanging out in the new Social Space are definite group favourites.

Tuesday: engagement and connections

Tuesday mornings are packed with classes and tutorials. In the afternoon, I shift my focus to my roles within the Student Union or my ambassador duties. This could involve meeting with co-reps to discuss any requests or inquiries we've received, writing articles, or preparing for upcoming webinars.

Lunchtimes are perfect for catching up with friends, often at The Curve or Ground Café, followed by some downtime in the social spaces around campus. Exploring new spots on campus or discovering nearby areas is a regular part of my Tuesday routine, keeping things fresh and exciting.

Wednesday: balancing the academic and professional

Wednesdays are reserved for professional engagements, which have been invaluable for gaining real-world experience. In my first semester I volunteered as a part-time data analyst at a charity, and later, I worked part-time as a marketing data analyst within the External Relations Directorate at Queen Mary. These roles allowed me to apply my skills in practical scenarios and gain essential experience.

The university’s Careers Service often holds workshops on Wednesdays, which complement my workday perfectly. After a day of professional growth, I sometimes hit the gym or meet up with friends to relax. Depending on my workload, some Wednesday evenings are also dedicated to catching up on studies.

Thursday: focus and recharge

Thursdays are dedicated to attending classes and tutorials, with any free time spent in the library. Monthly Student-Staff Liaison meetings often take place on Thursdays, providing an opportunity to voice concerns and improve the student experience. These meetings typically run later than my regular lectures, allowing me to enjoy one of my favourite moments: catching the stunning sunset over Canary Wharf’s skyline from the open spaces in the Maths building—a beautiful visual treat.

Thursday evenings are reserved for ‘me time’. I usually head home to unwind, study in the comfort of my own space, and recharge. As much as I enjoy being around others, I find this midweek downtime essential for maintaining my energy and focus.

Friday: working and socialising

Fridays begin with an early morning gym session, setting a positive tone for the day. I then focus on my professional duties, experiencing a typical day in the office while still being a student. This routine has helped me understand what life might look like post-MSc and has given me insight into industries and roles that align with my interests in maths and data.

Friday nights are a non-negotiable time for fun with friends. We often explore London's vibrant nightlife and attractions or try out new food places. Each Friday feels like a new adventure, a much-needed break from the week’s routine.

The weekend: relaxing and preparing

Weekends are a blend of relaxation and preparation. The daytime is typically spent studying, reading, and completing assignments or preparing for upcoming tests. I also take this time to wrap up any tasks related to my Course Rep or ambassador duties. There’s usually enough time for a workout, ensuring I stay active throughout the week.

Saturday nights often feature social events, whether they’re spontaneous outings with friends or organised gatherings by Queen Mary, such as themed parties at Drapers or society meetups. These events are always a highlight of the week, infusing a sense of fun and community that makes the weekend feel truly special.
