Now a Developer at Spreadex
My time at Queen Mary has been incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally.
I studied an applied Mathematics degree which has given me a great platform to understand the world outside the classroom, with many concepts and theories having real world applications; this has greatly aided me in finding a role after university. Also, I believe that while being commercially aware is vital when entering the world of work, the most important quality I gained from Queen Mary was the ability to learn, that is, in my current role I am constantly learning and challenging my way of thinking, which I wouldn’t be able to do if it were not for the time I spent at university.
Queen Mary has also helped me form some great friendships both from the School of Mathematical Sciences, as well as from other departments by attending various social and professional events, both in person and digitally. It was very enjoyable to talk with new people at these events, most of which I would never have had the chance to meet otherwise.
Now a Artificial Intelligence Scientist at AstraZeneca
Choosing to join the MSc Data Analytics degree at Queen Mary is probably one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I came from a psychology background and the course was very math heavy. But thankfully, the lecturers were incredibly patient with my questions and offered a significant amount of support during office hours. This made my transition a lot smoother than it could have been and I am forever grateful for it. The content was also intellectually stimulating with a good balance of theory and practice. The math part was grounded in the context to which it would be applied, which made it much easier to understand the bigger picture.
The course not only teaches the technicality of the content, but also teaches you how to think like a mathematician. I also met a bunch of intelligent and funny people on the programme. They are all incredible in their own way and have made my university life a lot more enjoyable.
The course offers a great opportunity to take on challenging dissertation projects and builds a solid foundation in applied mathematics, both of which have proven to be very useful in helping me secure my current role as a Data Scientist at AstraZeneca. I highly recommend the programme, it is not the easiest for sure, but I hope you will make the most of it.
Now a Research Assistant at Ruhr University Bochum
The time I spent at Queen Mary as a postgraduate student provided me with some of the most beautiful memories of my life. Academically it was one of the most satisfying experiences as I had the privilege of learning Mathematics from some of the best professors. I did my bachelor's in Computer Engineering before making the shift to Pure Mathematics and it was because of the immense help from the professors that my postgraduate experience was so rewarding and beneficial. I would also like to emphasize that the MSc in Mathematics at Queen Mary provides you with the option of choosing a variety of topics as electives, including topics from both Pure and Applied Mathematics. This is extremely helpful as I was able to choose topics that were necessary for me to apply for a PhD in areas related to Cryptography.
I am currently pursuing my doctoral degree in Theoretical Cryptography at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. Since my aim was to work in Theoretical Cryptography it was extremely important to have a good understanding of Algebra and Probability and because of the flexibility of the degree, it was easy for me to select these subjects. It would have been difficult to achieve my goal of doing my PhD without the guidance of the School of Mathematical Sciences.
The entire experience of studying at such a prestigious university in the heart of London is incomparable - London is one of the best places to study for an international student. I would also like to point out that the University helped us a lot when the first wave of COVID-19 hit the UK. Queen Mary kept in touch with us and made certain arrangements which would lighten our mood during such a depressing time. I will always be grateful to Queen Mary for providing me with such a wonderful experience.
