Queen Mary’s Blizard Building has been awarded one of the world’s most prestigious international architecture awards.
The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies have honoured the Medical School research laboratory as part of the 2009 International Architecture Awards.
The International Architecture Awards recognise some of the most important buildings constructed this decade, which have been designed with the highest level of imagination and inspiration. The jury, consisting of a distinguished group of Finnish architects, educators and critics, gave awards to 100 buildings, after receiving more than 1,000 nominations.
Designed by the award winning Alsop Design Ltd and AMEC, the Blizard Building accommodates 400 scientists on a single research floor the size of a football pitch - the largest of its kind in a UK university. Vivid use of colour throughout the building includes fuchsia-pink and tomato-red. The glass-walled structure has a dramatic interior which houses a range of pods, including the Centre of the Cell.
The Blizard Building has already been honoured in 2006 by the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the Civic Trust.
