Two Queen Mary spin-out companies have ranked in the top 40 of The Sunday Times league of Britain's fastest-growing private tech companies.
Orthopaedic company ApaTech Ltd was ranked in second place, while Retroscreen Ltd, which carries out virology research, was number 40 in the league.
The businesses are spin-outs firms from the College, whose Innovation team (QMI), are active in commercialising academic research. QMI pursues a wide-ranging portfolio of patent applications globally and holds a number of granted patents that are transferred directly to industry.
ApaTech is a world leader in orthobiologics, through its development, production and sales of world-leading synthetic bone graft technology. Commenting on their second-place ranking, Simon Cartmell, Chief Executive Officer of ApaTech, said: “This award recognises our delivery on the promise of our technology and its huge commercial potential. It is a great tribute to the success of our scientific leadership and the dedication of our people.”
Retroscreen Virology is Europe's leading contract Virology research company. The business is dedicated to creating the next generation of antivirals and vaccines in the field of biomedical research. The 2009 Tech Track 100 ranks Britain's fastest-growing private tech companies based on sales growth over the latest three years, from 2005 to 2008, or 2006 to 2009. The league table was published in The Sunday Times on 20 September 2009 and is supported by the title sponsor Microsoft.
