Queen Mary, University of London is the lead institution for London East Thames Gateway (LETG) Aimhigher scheme, which aims to boost widening participation in higher education.
The new Aimhigher Associates scheme targets learners from disadvantaged backgrounds in secondary schools and colleges in the London. It provides them with the opportunity to take part in small group sessions led by trained higher education student ambassadors, where they benefit by finding out about the vast opportunities that are open to them within higher education.
Students from Queen Mary will be working as Associates in the sports strand of the scheme and will support and encourage the pupils as they encounter the various transition milestones between Year 9 and Year 13.
LETG Aimhigher Partnership Manager at Queen Mary, Susan Mueller, said: “The Aimhigher Associates scheme is the ideal opportunity to combine HE student ambassador work in schools and colleges with getting young people involved in and excited about sports in East London’s Olympic boroughs.”
Aimhigher benefits young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who traditionally experience lower progression to higher education. Aimhigher partnerships work closely with their partner schools and colleges to identify pupils that have the potential to progress to higher education but are under-achieving, undecided or lacking in confidence. Over two years the national Aimhigher Associates scheme will fund around 8,000 university students to support over 40,000 school and college pupils.
