Professor Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, and President of Universities UK, will deliver Queen Mary’s fourth annual Drapers’ Lecture on Learning and Teaching, on Thursday 22 October 2009.
The annual Drapers’ Lecture Series gives new and challenging perspectives on learning and teaching from a variety of viewpoints, institutions and organisations and provides a forum for the presentation of national strategy and policy issues within Higher Education.
Entitled ‘The Future of Higher Education: Funding and the Economy’ the lecture will be of interest to those with an interest in higher education policy, from senior staff, academics, students or others involved in education.
Professor Smith, explains: "We cannot take for granted that the political prioritisation of higher education will continue. But we will not argue merely that HE should be protected from cuts. We will argue for growth in investment in teaching and research, not despite the current economic crisis, but because of it."
Professor Smith has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter since October 2002, and was previously Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) and Professor of International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, as well as Head of the Department of International Politics, and Director of the Centre for Public Choice Studies at the University of East Anglia.
Following on from the success of the previous lectures, given by Professor Marcus du Sautoy, Baroness Morris and Professor McPhee, the College is delighted that the Drapers’ Company of the City of London have agreed to continue their support for this prestigious event.
Professor Morag Shiach, Vice Principal for Teaching and Learning, commented: “Professor Smith’s lecture will inform and inspire the whole teaching community and contribute to our commitment to excellence and innovation in all our teaching.”
Together with the Drapers’ Prizes for Developments in Learning and Teaching and the Drapers’ Awards for Excellence in Teaching, this lecture is part of the College’s continuing commitment to the promotion and recognition of excellence in teaching and learning support.
The Fourth Annual Drapers’ Lecture on Teaching and Learning will be held on Thursday 22 October at 6.00pm in the Mason Lecture Theatre, at the College’s Mile End Campus.
