A research clinician from Queen Mary, University of London has just been elected President of the British Hypertension Society.
Professor Mark Caulfield is Director of the William Harvey Research Institute and an expert in the genetic causes of high blood pressure.
The British Hypertension Society is a highly-respected professional body which brings together doctors and scientists in a bid to understand the causes of high blood pressure and improve its treatment. Together with the National Institute of Clinical Excellence it has developed national guidance for blood pressure treatment.
High blood pressure affects at least eighteen million people in the UK and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
Although a number of lifestyle factors, such as drinking too much alcohol, lack of exercise, being overweight and consuming a high-salt diet, can raise blood pressure, the condition can also run in families.
Professor Caulfield said: “It’s a great honour to be elected president of the British Hypertension Society. This society plays a key role in research into the causes of high blood pressure and improving treatment and prevention of heart disease and stroke. The society is making great leaps forward and it’s an exciting time to take on this role.”
