An important milestone was reached this week when the London Borough of Havering appointed one of the country’s largest construction companies to build the new Drapers’ Academy.
At a recent Cabinet Meeting Havering agreed to select Kier Construction as the preferred bidder for the new Academy building. This is a key development that will now allow a huge amount of detailed work concerning planning and design of every aspect of the building, including information technology and furniture, to take place. If all goes to plan work will start on site in October with completion by August 2012.
Both the London Borough of Havering and the sponsors of the Academy, the Drapers’ Company and Queen Mary, University of London, were impressed by the quality of the design submitted by Kier and their architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Not only had they designed an excellent building for education but also it was building of high quality that reflects the green belt location of the site.
Adrian Lyons, Chair of the Drapers’ Academy said: "Both sponsors have long experience in creating schools and colleges that proudly promote the status of education. The design developed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios for Kier Construction responds our aspirations extremely well. But even more importantly we think that this is building where it going to be a really great place to learn and is a really promising start to the Learning Village."
