Queen Mary, University of London has been short-listed in two categories in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. This year’s nominations for; ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’, and ‘Most Improved Student Experience’, bring to 15 the total received by the College since the Awards began.
Now in their 7th year, the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards are something akin to the ‘Oscars’ of the Higher Education sector, representing a highlight in the academic calendar and celebrating the best the sector has to offer.
The nomination for ‘Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers’ was gained for the ImpactQM internship scheme: ImpactQM is a ground-breaking knowledge transfer project whose aim is to create a new generation of science and engineering professionals, equally at home in academia and industry. It supports early career researchers in a variety of ways including via information events, Ph.D. student internships and by jointly co-funding knowledge transfer projects with industry.
‘Most Improved Student Experience’ – won by Queen Mary in 2010 – is the only prize to be judged by the students themselves. A nationwide poll asked full-time undergraduates to rate how their university performed in; campus environment, extra-curricular activities, student/staff relationships, academic workload and quality of accommodation. The nomination follows last month’s National Student Survey in which Queen Mary was scored five percentage points above the national average for student satisfaction and best amongst the big London universities.
Vice-Principal of Queen Mary Professor Philip Ogden said: “We are delighted to be short-listed in these two categories which reflect Queen Mary's commitment both to research and the career development of our research staff; and to our students and the steps we have taken in recent years to provide a first-class experience of higher education.”
There are 18 categories in this year’s awards; the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on 24 November 2011 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
