Students from Queen Mary, University of London have created a new journal for the publication of original poetry, fiction and literary journalism by fellow student writers.
The first edition of Queen Mary Review will be launched on Tuesday 20th March.
“Despite having an extensive and thriving student media at Queen Mary, we found that current publications focus more on factual journalism, rather than articles of a creative nature,” explains the publication’s co-editor Gabriel Gonzalez-Acosta, a second year Comparative Literature student.
“Many students write poems, short stories and scripts in their spare time, with the majority remaining unpublished or unseen. Queen Mary Review gives us a chance to share our work- it’s an excellent way to channel a more creative and artistic influence into the student media at QM.”
The Review team have already received a diverse and high quality range of creative writing, from short one-hundred-word-stories to romantic poetry, contributing to an inaugural edition which is diverse in its genre, style and tone.
Queen Mary Review also features literary journalism, with articles in the first edition including a profile of author Benjamin Markovits and an interview with former Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion.
While many of the editorial decisions have been made by students working toward English and Comparative Literature degrees, Queen Mary Review welcomes submissions from all who study at QM.
Gabriel adds: “We are conscious that we do not want to be an elitist or pretentious publication. We’re promoting our project College-wide, asking for a comprehensive and broad range of submissions from undergraduate and postgraduates from all departments, from Politics to Physics.”
Free copies of the journal’s first edition will be available at its launch event, with a selection of readings from chosen works taking place on the night. Future issues will be available at Ground, The Curve and other student facilities, with content also available online at www.qmreview.co.uk.
