Queen Mary, University of London – which attracts some of India’s brightest students – has been invited to become a member of the Russell Group of universities. The invitation is an acknowledgment of Queen Mary’s quality and status as a top-class research-led institution and comes in the same month that Principal, Professor Simon Gaskell embarks on a trip to India where he will meet with College alumni. Professor Gaskell’s visit, beginning on March 26, will take in Mumbai and Delhi.
Inclusion in the Russell Group means Queen Mary is one of now 24 leading UK universities that are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience, excellent graduate employability and unrivalled links with business and the public sector.
The College hopes to expand its existing links with a number of prestigious Indian universities focusing on joint research, staff and student mobility and the development of collaborative degree programmes.
Two full-time staff members, recently employed by Queen Mary’s partners in India, Sannam S4, will play an important role in achieving this as well as identifying new opportunities for the development of sustainable partnerships between Queen Mary and Indian institutions and companies. They will also liaise between QM, its prospective students, and alumni.
Professor Simon Gaskell said: “Our India-based alumni make a vital contribution to promoting the academic success and values of the College to future generations of Indian students, over 250 of whom are currently pursuing their studies across a range of courses and academic disciplines at Queen Mary. Their input must be recognised in having contributed to our achievements over the last decade – achievements that have led recently to an invitation for Queen Mary to join the Russell Group. This acknowledges our quality and status as a top-class research intensive university and it is through our ongoing, much-valued relationships with countries such as India that we will continue to flourish and succeed in our endeavours to be among the top 10 such universities in the UK.”
