Queen Mary, University of London has established an important strategic partnership with the computing giant IBM, to identify areas of mutual interest and spark new ideas for collaboration in research, teaching and recruitment.
Queen Mary’s Principal Professor Simon Gaskell recently joined Gerry Reilly of IBM - a Queen Mary alumnus - in signing the agreement as part of a Knowledge Exchange day.
The technology company is already a regular participant on Queen Mary’s Intellectual Property Law programme and has also been brought on board to supply cutting-edge IT for the university.
Professor McOwan, Queen Mary’s Vice Principal for External Relations and Public Engagement, said: “Innovation and collaboration have a key role to play in Queen Mary’s history as a top-class research-led institution. We are excited about our partnership with IBM, as it underscores QM’s continued commitment to enhance our research and teaching activities through collaborations with industry and commerce.
“There are potential opportunities to work together in many different fields including electrical engineering, computer science, commercial law, business management and behavioural sciences.”
Mutual interests in China are one of the key areas that will be explored.
Professor McOwan hosted a session during Knowledge Exchange Day that included an overview of IBM research presented by Richard Appleby, IBM’s Client Technical Advisor, Media and Entertainment Industry. Presentations by Professor Martin Laffin and Professor Ian Walden highlighted the university’s work in Business and Management and Commercial Law Studies. Professor Wen Wang demonstrated areas of mutual interest in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, such as working together to process, share and analyse large data sets to help understand complex problems.
IBM’s Gerry Reilly, Director of WebSphere Messaging Development and Customer Support, said during Knowledge Exchange Day: “As a QM Alumnus and with two other QM Alumni with me, Christopher Gibson and Richard Appleby, I am personally delighted to be signing this agreement with Queen Mary. Queen Mary now becomes IBM’s 12th partnership university in the UK and we are already working together on so many different opportunities for collaboration.”
