Queen Mary, University of London’s Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine has announced the introduction of a new module in Dance Medicine, to commence in January 2013.
The module will run as part of the Centre’s internationally renowned postgraduate degree programme. The Centre - part of Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary - offers both an MSc and Postgraduate Diploma in sports and exercise medicine for doctors and physiotherapists.
The new Dance Medicine module focuses on the causes of dance-related injuries, prevention, care and rehabilitation practices as well as the biomechanical, functional and physical requirements of dance techniques. Students will study dancers' common conditions and diseases, such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, also including nutrition-related conditions and their implication to performance, injury and the general health of dancers.
Director of the Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine, Professor Nicola Mafulli, comments: “The course has been running for 31 years and continues to be extremely popular. We are very sensitive to the needs of our students, and, over the years, we have changed and adapted the course to make it more topical and up to date.
“This year, we realised that several of our students perceived that a stand alone module on Dance Medicine would be appealing. Following the appointment of a new research facilitator, a classical dancer in her own right, we decided that the time was right to introduce a Dance Medicine module.”
Alumni from the Centre for Sports Exercise and Medicine have progressed to elite positions in the international arena. They include Dr Ian Beasley, Head of Medical Services at The FA Group, Dr Richard Budgett, CMO for the London 2012 Olympics, Dr Nikos Malliaropoulos CMO for the Athen’s Olympic Committee, Dr Simon Kemp, CMO, England Rugby, Dr Nick Webborn, CMO, Team GB, Paralympics 2012.
