Queen Mary will be one of the few institutions in London to offer a new degree programme that has been designed with the help of some of the world’s leading employers.
Endorsed by e-skills UK – Sector Skills Council for Information Technology & Business – after a consultation with the biggest global employers, the Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) degree programme is an exciting option for students interested in IT and business.
Lecturer and programme coordinator Rachel Appleton, said: “Businesses rely on technology to an increasing level nowadays. They need graduates who don’t just understand the technical aspects of programming but can also manage the business in real-world situations. This course will deliver graduates who can do both.”
Students will develop their technical skills by learning how to programme computer code. They will also develop project management skills and attend special lectures from industry experts. There will be two events where students from all ITMB degrees in the UK can meet with nearly 80 different employers who are closely involved in the course. Students have the opportunity to attend interview sessions, and enter competitions which involve work experience prizes.
Rachel added: “Graduates from the Queen Mary ITMB course will be well placed to compete for jobs – their first year will be spent mastering the technical aspects of programming and management, and the following years will develop their understanding and contact with industry through placements and a series of guru lectures.”
Peter Morrison, IT Infrastructure Manager, Credit Suisse, said: “Credit Suisse have had a number of ITMB undergrads and grads through our summer intern and graduate recruitment and technical analyst programmes. From my point of view the key differentiators are business-focused project work allows the candidates to work in teams - we can really see leadership communication and collaboration skills emerging and developing in the ITMB candidates, and the course split between Computer Science / IT modules and Business modules makes for more rounded candidates."
Queen Mary is less than a couple of miles from Tech City - an area around Old Street that’s home to at least 400+ digital start-ups, including Last.fm, SoundCloud and TweetDeck. The School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science have links with a number of companies in the area and also sponsors the Digital Shoreditch Festival taking place from May 20 - 27. Recent students from the School have found placements with global companies many of which have been involved in determining the ITMB course, such as Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Google, IBM and Reuters.
