Celebrate an alternative Valentine's Day at Bart's Pathology Museum, part of Queen Mary, University of London, with a heart surgery demo and expert tips on how consuming wine and chocolate could maintain a healthy heart.
The Museum's annual Mending Broken Hearts seminar takes place on Wednesday 13 February. It follows the hugely successful 2012 event on the health benefits of chocolate and the facts and myths about ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’.
Guest speaker Roger Corder, author of The Red Wine Diet and Professor of Experimental Therapeutics at Queen Mary's medical school, will discuss the benefits of wine and chocolate for the heart and will reveal how to live well for longer, and have fun in the process.
Professor Corder is joined by Cardiothoracic Surgeon Mr Wael Awad of Barts Health NHS Trust. He will be demonstrating surgical procedures with the aid of video and computer graphics and giving an overview of coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement and heart transplants.
For the first time, the Museum's full collection of heart specimens will be on display during the evening.
A box of four anatomical heart-shaped cakes created by baker-to-the-stars Lily Vanilli has been donated to the event and will be raffled off at the end of the night to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
Guests at this ‘alternate Valentine’s Day’ can enjoy complimentary wine, chocolates and the chance to view the museum’s medical specimens. Whilst undergoing a period of restoration, the museum is not open daily and the specimens can only be viewed during seminars and workshops.
Tickets to the event are £6, including refreshments, and must be booked through the Queen Mary e-shop: http://tinyurl.com/bartshearts
