Jo Martin, Professor of Pathology at Queen Mary, University of London, has been appointed by NHS Medical Director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh as the new National Clinical Director of Pathology for the NHS Commissioning Board.
Professor Martin, who is also Director of Academic Health Sciences at Barts Health NHS Trust, will work alongside patients, clinicians, healthcare scientists, policy makers and management to spearhead positive change across the country’s pathology services.
Professor Richard Trembath, Vice Principal and Executive Dean (Health) at Queen Mary, said: “We are delighted that Jo has received recognition for the years of tireless work she has put into developing pathology services. Her commitment to the NHS and also health education is second to none.”
Professor Martin said: “I am delighted to take on this new challenge and I look forward to working with a wide range of NHS stakeholders to ensure all patients, wherever they are in the country, have access to pathology services of the highest quality.
“Pathology services play a vital role in analysing and identifying disease, its causes, and appropriate treatment and I would like to see these services helping deliver excellence in every aspect of patient care.”
Professor Martin will take up her new leadership position in April 2013 and will devote one day a week to the role alongside her continuing work at Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary.
