Parents looking for something to entertain and educate budding scientists during the next half term can breathe easy, as Centre of the Cell in Whitechapel presents ‘Something in the Air’ – an interactive show about air pollution.
Alex Jenkin, Centre of the Cell’s Learning and Outreach Officer says: “Pollution is invisible to the naked eye, but how much does it really affect us? We’re based in east London where pollution can be a major issue. Our workshop explains what air pollution is, how we can measure it, how it affects our bodies and what we can do to avoid it.”
On Thursday 29 May visitors to the Queen Mary University of London science education hub on Newark Street can also get sink their teeth into a ‘Teethtastic’ workshop, taking part in a giant DIY toothpaste experiment, exploring how many teeth a shark has and discovering how to get terrific teeth and gorgeous gums.
Workshop leaders will explain what cells teeth are made of, why we need different types of teeth, and how many we have compared to other animals.
Each session offers the opportunity to take part in a Pod show inside the Centre’s cell-shaped Pod, suspended over the laboratories of Queen Mary’s research labs at the Blizard Institute. Once inside, visitors will learn about the amazing world of cells, the human body and the latest medical research, try their hand at virtual experiments, see real body parts and diagnose cancer using high-power microscopes.
Something in the Air workshops take place from 10:00 – 12:15 and 11:15 – 13:30 on Wednesday 28 May
Teethtastic workshops take place from 12:00 – 14:15 and 13:15 – 15:30 on Thursday 29 May
