The Law School at Queen Mary University of London will hold open days for refugees and asylum seekers on Monday 15 February and Tuesday 16 February 2016.
The open days are part of QMUL’s #RefugeesWelcome programme and will provide information about access to legal aid, access to education, recognition of qualifications, and career advice.
The open days are free and open to refugees, asylum seekers and their families in the United Kingdom, particularly in London. Information and advice sessions will go through the resources available to refugees and asylum seekers, after which there will be an opportunity for questions and answers with experts.
Professor Valsamis Mitsilegas, Head of the Department of Law at QMUL said: “These are topics about which Queen Mary and our partners have considerable expertise and experience. Our message to those who are struggling to find answers is simple: come along, ask questions, and let us help you.”
The open days are part QMUL’s Refugee Week, which runs from Monday 15 February to Thursday 18 February. The programme includes a public lecture by Professor François Crépeau, UN Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants and a public screening of Bruce Goodison’s refugee drama ‘Leave to Remain’.
In this session law firms and advice centres will come to talk about the resources that are available to help refugees and asylum seekers transition to life in the UK.
This session will cover in particular qualifications for studying and earning a degree in the United Kingdom. It also deals with fees, scholarships and other opportunities available to students from all backgrounds. QMUL has initiatives to provide assistance and support for refugees and asylum seekers to gain access to higher education, as well as support for students who are new to London.
This session will deal with the qualifications necessary for various jobs in the United Kingdom. Speakers will address areas including engineering, medicine, law and education.
