Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is delighted to announce the appointment of its first Fulbright Scholar, who will join the School of Physics and Astronomy in the academic year 2016-17.
Dr Apriel Hodari will work with QMUL academics on a project to create new theory, policy recommendations, and transatlantic collaborations to improve widening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines in both the US and the UK.
She is Principal Investigator at Eureka Scientific, Inc, and serves as co-leader (with Maria Ong) of the Beyond the Double Bind projects, investigating the lived experiences of women of colour in STEM disciplines. Dr Hodari earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, and Physics Master of Science (MS) and PhD degrees from Hampton University. She is an expert in STEM education research, STEM educational equity and workforce diversity, and the culture of STEM disciplines.
Dr Hodari comments: “My project aligns with QMUL's commitment to widening participation in STEM, grounded in research, policy and practice, as evidenced by the university’s School of Physics and Astronomy’s recognition by the Institute of Physics and its participation in the South East Physics Network. I am most looking forward to learning how QMUL has made such sustained progress, and to building strong partnerships through which to advance further.”
Head of School of Physics and Astronomy, Professor Steve Lloyd said: "I am very pleased that Dr Hodari will be coming to the School of Physics and Astronomy as a Fulbright Scholar. The School has recently achieved Institute of Physics Juno Champion and Athena Swan Silver for our efforts to address the under-representation of women in university physics. Working with Dr Hodari will enable us to further embed our practices, to put them on a more academically sound basis and to widen them to cover other types of diversity."
