Each year, the Mile End Institute invites a distinguished politician to reflect on the issues of the day in honour of its patron, Peter Hennessy. The 2017 Hennessy Lecture will be delivered by Neil Kinnock.
Lord Kinnock will be in conversation with Professor Peter Hennessy, after which there will be a Q&A with the audience. Admission is free but places are limited, and registration is essential.
Lord Kinnock served as a Member of Parliament from 1970 until 1995, and was the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 1983 until 1992. He went on to become the Vice-President of the European Commission under Romano Prodi from 1999 to 2004. He is one of the most informed and experienced speakers on the Labour Party, as well as British and European politics.
The Hennessy Lecture 2017 will be held in the Great Hall, People's Palace, Queen Mary University of London, on Tuesday 3 October from 7pm.
The inaugural Hennessy Lecture was given in 2015 by Lord Owen on the subject of referendums. The 2016 lecture was given by Lord Heseltine on the forgotten people" - the consequences of over-centralised power.
Reserve your place for the 2017 Hennessy Lecture.
The Mile End Institute is a major new policy centre established at Queen Mary University of London, building on the foundations of our predecessor organisation, the Mile End Group.
Drawing on our unique location within a Russell Group University situated in London’s East End, we bring together policymakers, academics and diverse local communities to address the major political challenges in the UK. The Institute calls on a large pool of expertise from the Schools of History and Politics under the guidance of our patron, the historian and cross-bench peer Peter Hennessy.
