Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is due to hold joint legal training with Qatar's Ministry of Justice.
The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Doha to cooperate in the legal, academic and professional training of Qatari lawyers.
Professor David Sadler, QMUL’s Vice-Principal (International) and Fatima Abdulaziz Bilal Director of the Legal and Judicial Studies Centre at the Ministry of Justice signed the MoU, under which the two sides hope to expand research collaborations, develop joint legal qualifications, and encourage exchange of researchers and trainers.
The first step as part of the MoU will be to hold a 3-4 day Executive Training Program on Arbitration in Qatar in November 2017, attended by academics from QMUL’s Centre for Commerical Law Studies (CCLS).
Professor David Sadler said: "We are delighted to sign this first agreement with the Legal and Judicial Studies Centre at the Ministry of Justice. Both in terms of our international reputation and the excellent teaching and research offered in the School of Law, QMUL is strongly placed to share its academic and legal expertise with Qatari jurists from across legal professions."
"This MoU is a further indication of QMUL’s commitment to expanding our partnerships in the Middle East and in Qatar in particular. We look forward to helping facilitate greater information exchange, teaching and research collaboration as a result of this MoU."
Professor Spyros Maniatis, Head of QMUL’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), said: "I am thrilled that QMUL and Qatar’s Ministry of Justice are offering joint legal training sessions. At CCLS, we are one of the top commercial postgraduate law schools in the world, with in-depth expertise in many areas of commercial law."
"Combining excellence in teaching and research, we strive to be at the forefront of legal scholarship and law reform. And we are looking forward to sharing our expertise with our Qatari colleagues," he added.
The MoU came as part of a QMUL visit to the Middle East in April 2017, which also included Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE and Egypt.
