William Harvey Day 2017 saw hundreds of attendees gather to celebrate the best of research at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
The annual research day, which took place on Wednesday 18 October, showcased research from staff and students at all stages of their career, and across a variety of disciplines.
Talks from QMUL researchers covered topics including breast cancer, pregnancy complications, primary care, HIV, arthritis, skin conditions, dentistry and bioinformatics. In addition to the packed lecture theatre, the Great Hall and Pathology Museum at Barts saw attendees learn about early research findings from more than 170 posters.
Guest speakers included Professor Timothy Billiar from the University of Pittsburgh who discussed the challenges of translating trauma research into the clinic, Dr Louise Wood from the National Institute for Health Research speaking about the future of healthcare in the UK, and broadcaster Nick Ross on the dangerous charm of medical quackery.
Awards for research posters went to Alexander Cresswell-Boyes, David Jolliffe, Mihai Nicolae Podaru, Matejka Rebolj, Mary Walker, Alexandra Clark and Julie Borgel, while Faraz Mardakheh and Suchita Nadkarni received awards for best oral presentations.
The day concluded with a procession from the Great Hall to the church of St Bartholomew the Great for the annual St Luke’s Tide Service, which was led by The Right Reverend Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury.
Professor Steve Thornton, Vice Principal (Health) at QMUL, said: “This has been a truly amazing day. We’ve seen a fantastic breadth of research from the School of Medicine and Dentistry, with some very high quality presentations. Our early career researchers have presented outstanding work which is clearly setting them up for a future of high impact research and making a difference to patients and the population. I’d also like to thank our three guests for their plenary lectures, each of which was absolutely superb.”
