Queen Mary University of London has secured record levels of funding for research and doctoral studentships with its Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Faculty has been recently successful in attracting funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) as well as the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Leverhulme Trust.
The most recent funding awards build on previous success for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary. In 2016 the ESRC funded the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP) of which Queen Mary is a partner. Led by King’s College London, the LISS DTP provides a unique opportunity for social science scholars to develop research communities connecting to other disciplines including health, medicine and engineering.
Earlier this summer the AHRC announced a new tranche of funding for doctoral training partnerships which will fund and train postgraduate students over five annual cohorts from October 2019 across the London Arts and Humanities Partnership (LAHP).
In addition to training, the initiative encourages doctoral researchers to develop new ways of carrying out research. It also has a network of partnerships with leading organisations in the cultural sector, providing a useful resource for students in Queen Mary’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The record levels of funding for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences mean that the number of funded PhD studentships has doubled.
Professor Matthew Hilton, Vice-Principal for Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary, said: “I am delighted that we have been successful in more than doubling the amount of funded PhD studentships available in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary. I look forward to seeing our world-leading research continue to go from strength to strength in the future.”
Professor Adrian Smith, Dean for Research in Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen Mary, said: “It is wonderful to see the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences attracting record levels of funding for both doctoral training partnerships and studentships, including doctoral training centre scholarships from the Leverhulme Trust for the first time. This new funding reaches across the spectrum of research foci in the Faculty.”
