The Shanghai Commission of Education has awarded Professor Rodrigo Olivares-Caminal from Queen Mary University of London the honorary title of ‘Oriental Scholar’ - the highest standing title for non-Chinese academics.
The title recognises Professor Olivares-Caminal’s contributions to the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) over the past five years, where he has launched a joint research institute, acted as Visiting Professor, and co-organised international conferences.
Olivares-Caminal, who is Professor of Banking and Finance Law at Queen Mary’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS), has acted as a sovereign debt expert for the United Nations and has taught in countries including Argentina, China, Colombia, France, Greece, Italy and Spain. One of his books on debt restructuring has already been published in Chinese.
As Oriental Scholar at ECUPL, Professor Olivares-Caminal will lead on the Queen Mary-ECUPL joint research institute, support the design and delivery of postgraduate modules in financial law, provide training and guidance for research projects, and promote collaboration between both institutions.
On receiving the award, he said: “I am honoured to receive this award from ECUPL, a university that has unparalleled influence and prestige for legal education in Shanghai and East China. I look forward to the ongoing collaboration between our two universities and to developing even stronger links with China.”
Led by Professor Olivares-Caminal, the Queen Mary-ECUPL research institute aims to facilitate research on financial innovation, governance and the rule of law in the field of banking, finance and international economic law. The institute will research the implications of the internationalisation of the Chinese currency, as well as the development of Shanghai as an international financial centre.
Founded in 1952, ECUPL is one of the only higher education institutions in China that specialises in legal education. As a result, it holds unparalleled influence in Shanghai and greater East China, which is China’s most developed geographical division.
The Queen Mary-ECUPL research institute builds on Queen Mary’s existing links in China.
Since 2004, the university has partnered with the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), one of China’s top telecommunications-specialist universities, to offer joint programmes in telecommunications, systems and networks.
Following the success of the BUPT collaboration, Queen Mary established a Joint Programme with Nanchang University in 2012, and a Joint Educational Institute with Northwestern Polytechnical University in 2017.
In 2015, Queen Mary established a Confucius Institute in partnership with Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
