Queen Mary University of London has appointed a new Vice-Principal for Policy and Strategic Partnerships. Dr Philippa Lloyd, currently Director General of Higher and Further Education at the Department for Education, will take up the post on Wednesday 2 January 2019.
The new role of Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships) will focus on policy and partnership development at the local, regional and international level and the role will involve engaging with local government and other local organisations, business and industry, national and international agencies, and national Government, where appropriate.
Professor Colin Bailey, Principal and President of Queen Mary University of London, said: “I’m delighted that Dr Lloyd will be joining the senior leadership team at Queen Mary. Philippa’s knowledge and experience will be critical in ensuring that Queen Mary is active in national and international discussions about higher education and policy issues more widely, and will help shape and develop our strategic purpose in the years ahead.”
Dr Lloyd said: “I am delighted to be joining Queen Mary University of London. I have long admired the University which I believe is unique in bringing together outstanding research and teaching with a strong commitment to enhancing the local skills and education agenda, and providing prospective students of all backgrounds with the opportunity of a Russell Group education. The University is very well placed to contribute to national and international discussions about the future of higher education, and I look forward to working with my future colleagues to maximise those opportunities and build on the excellent work the University already does.”
Philippa Lloyd is a physicist by background with a PhD in atmospheric physics. She began her career as an editor on the science journal, Nature and first joined the Civil Service in the former Office of Science and Technology. While in Government, she has held a variety of policy and corporate roles and has acted as Principal Private Secretary to three Secretaries of State.
Dr Lloyd took up the post of Director General, People and Strategy in September 2012 in what was then the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. In July 2016, responsibility for higher and adult further education was moved to the Department for Education, and where she became the Director General responsible for higher and further education post-16.
