A festival aimed at secondary schools and young people interested in a career in science and medicine was held at Queen Mary University of London’s Mile End campus on 20 June.
Exhibitors at the festival provided hands on activities to encourage students to learn more about careers in science. Exhibitions included a peak flow meter where visitors could test their lung capacity, a stand measuring heart size and a knitted retina.
Now in its eighth year, the 2018 festival was supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) at Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London, and Trials Connect.
Jane Batchelor, Centre and Events Manager at NIHR Barts BRC, said: “The festival provides a space for young people curious about science and medicine or thinking about a career in science to gain a better understanding of the industry and the opportunities available to them.
“The hands on exhibits were a great way to show the younger generation how much fun science can be, it was great to see the room filled with laughter and enjoyment.”
Talks were given by Dr Fengjun He from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, Emm Johnstone from the School of Business and Management, and Trials Connect.
Attendees could also vote for their favorite image in Queen Mary’s Life Science Image Awards Exhibition. The Life Science Image Awards are created as an opportunity for Queen Mary staff and students to present their artistic perspective within the world of Life Sciences.
