Queen Mary University of London has been a long standing partner of the China Scholarship Council and this collaboration is set to continue for at least the next five years.
Professor Colin Bailey, President and Principal of Queen Mary University of London has signed a new five-year contract with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) alongside Secretary General Mr Sheng Jianxue at a special ceremony in Beijing.
Queen Mary was one of the first UK universities to offer fully funded PhDs in partnership with the CSC.
Professor Colin Bailey said: “As a long standing partner of the China Scholarship Council, Queen Mary is delighted to commit to providing 300 PhD places for CSC scholars over the next five years.
“Queen Mary has strong partnerships in China, we hope to enhance these and add new links all across China. With our partnership with the CSC we look to do even more, encompassing all aspects of higher education including teaching, research and staff training.”
Mr Sheng Jianxue, Secretary General of the China Scholarship Council said: “The joint programmes show that Queen Mary has played an important part in the internationalisation of China.
“As China continues to reform and open up, I hope that top international universities like Queen Mary will continue to help.”
Queen Mary University of London previously signed a contract with the CSC five years ago and between 2015 and 2019 over 220 students from China have benefitted from the collaborative scholarships.
Under the scheme Queen Mary will provide scholarships to cover all tuition fees, whilst the CSC will provide living expenses and one return flight ticket to successful applicants. This scholarship is available to both new and continuing (current 1st year) students.
For the next five years, under the terms of the new contract, Queen Mary is committing to offering 300 full fee waivers for China Scholarship Council funded students.
The awards will focus on priority areas for both the Chinese Government and Queen Mary. Key areas include science, technology, engineering and mathematics but the scholarships will also extend to social sciences as well as areas of medical sciences and dentistry.
Queen Mary University of London, a member of the Russell Group, was rated fifth in the UK for research output in the most recent Research Excellent Framework.
