The Faculty of Science and Engineering will be showcasing its research excellence to innovative companies with a focus on research and development, at the 2019 Faculty Industrial Research Engagement Day (FIRED-Up).
To be held at Queen Mary’s Mile End Campus, the day will bring together more than 200 professionals drawn from central government, academia and industry to explore new collaborative opportunities.
FIRED-Up 2019 will focus on four multidisciplinary themes: sustainable energy and environments, life science innovation, intelligent infrastructure, and artificial intelligence and data.
Deputy Dean for Research and organiser of FIRED-Up, Dr Eram Rizvi, said: “FIRED-Up aims to generate lasting collaborative research partnerships for the Faculty of Science and Engineering and to showcase our world leading research to industry. The event will create an environment where collaborations and partnerships can flourish.”
The event is set to be an immersive experience with interactive demonstrations of novel technologies, themed poster presentations from Queen Mary leading academic groups and presentations that exemplify successful faculty collaborations with business.
Queen Mary is ranked 5th in the UK for research quality with 90 per cent of Science and Engineering research graded as world-leading or internationally excellent. Earlier this year Queen Mary was awarded an Engineering Excellence award for a collaboration with LMK Thermosafe. In the partnership Queen Mary provided expertise around Processing-Structure-Property relationships in polymeric materials. Providing a focus on flexible self-regulating heating devices and polymers for energy, leading to the development of new novel materials.
High profile companies at the forefront of science and engineering will be hosting talks, these include: Lloyds Bank, Severn Trent Water, Hamamatsu Photonics and many more. As well as high-profile academics presenting on topics covering: risk assessment in the era of big data, high-speed electrically tuneable lenses, and new sustainable materials for energy storage and conversion technologies, just to name a few.
FIRED-Up will provide insight into leading research and development, and new technologies in science and engineering, as well as give an overview of the UK funding landscape and opportunities available.
Attendees will have the opportunity to broaden their networks and make meaningful connections with industry partners and leaders in research and development. There will be a strong focus on the resources, skills and facilities available at Queen Mary to facilitate and support business and research within the industry.
