Professor Marina Resmini from Queen Mary University of London has become a Trustee of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Chair of its Inclusion and Diversity committee.
The RSC is a professional association in the United Kingdom with the goal of ‘advancing the chemical sciences.’
Marina Resmini is a Professor of Materials Chemistry and Head of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department based at Queen Mary’s School of Biological and Chemical Science.
Her role as Chair of the RSC Inclusion and Diversity committee is to ensure the RSC realises its full potential through inclusive practices that seek to increase the diversity of the chemists' community.
Professor Resmini is passionate about inclusion and diversity, focusing in particular on gender balance in the chemical sciences. In 2016 she wrote a guest editorial titled The leaky pipeline in Chemistry: a European Journal, where she discussed the prevalence of gender bias and the need to address the loss of female talent from science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.
As a member of the Inclusion and Diversity Committee of the RSC since 2017, Professor Resmini has become involved in an RSC project focusing on the loss of female talent in the chemical sciences in academia. This resulted in the publication of the Breaking the Barriers report in November 2018.
Professor Resmini said: “I am very honoured to be appointed as Trustee of the RSC and Chair of its Inclusion and Diversity committee.
“It is a great opportunity to contribute to the fantastic work that the RSC is doing as the professional body for chemists in the UK, and also to provide leadership in promoting diversity in the chemical sciences.”
Professor Resmini has also been appointed for a period of four years as Trustee of the RSC. The board of trustees is responsible and collectively liable for the government and control of the RSC, its property and affairs, providing governance and leadership.
President of the RSC, Professor Dame Carol Robinson, said: “My colleagues and I are so pleased to welcome Marina as a Trustee of the Royal Society of Chemistry. We rely heavily on our member community, many of whom volunteer much of their precious time to support our work.
