Queen Mary’s Health and Safety team has been shortlisted for the annual Safety and Health Practitioner awards, which celebrate the achievements of the brightest and most passionate health and safety professionals. The team has been shortlisted in the ‘Most Influential Team’ category, which recognises teams that have worked together most effectively to improve occupational health, safety and workplace wellbeing.
The award judges have shortlisted the Queen Mary team in recognition of their work in supporting the University to rapidly re-start research laboratories after lockdown, benefiting the wider COVID research efforts and the University’s normal research output. They also recognised how the team have helped enabling teaching to resume on campus without significant transmission risks and residential students to live on campus with substantial in-person learning and on-campus activities.
Rebecca Jones, Director of Health and Safety at Queen Mary said:
“The team worked harder than ever in this incredibly difficult year to ensure the safety of our staff and students, so I am delighted that they have been recognised by one of the most important organisations in the health and safety industry.”
Professor Colin Bailey, President and Principal at Queen Mary said:
“This is a wonderful achievement that the health and safety team should be immensely proud of. It is a brilliant recognition of all their work this year, when they have been on the frontline of the University’s efforts during the pandemic.”
In addition to the collective shortlisting, team member Mark Ariyanayagam has also been individually recognised as a finalist for the COVID-19 Trailblazer Award.
Rebecca Jones added:
“Mark richly deserves this recognition for the outstanding efforts he made this year. Like every member of the team he is a top class health and safety professional who makes a massive contribution to life at Queen Mary.”
